How to Prepare Your Trees for Phoenix Monsoon Season (Before It's Too Late)
Living in the Valley means enjoying beautiful weather most of the year, but when summer hits, so do the monsoons. With sudden microbursts, aggressive winds, and heavy downpours, the Phoenix monsoon season is the ultimate stress test for your property's landscaping. At J-Rock Tree Service, the aftermath of a severe storm is our busiest time of year—but many of the emergency tree removals we do could have been prevented with proper preparation.
Here is everything you need to know to protect your trees, your home, and your wallet before the storm clouds roll in.
Why Monsoons Are So Dangerous for Desert Trees Many of the trees common in Arizona, like Mesquites and Palo Verdes, grow rapidly.
Without regular pruning, their canopies become incredibly dense. When a 60-mph monsoon wind hits a dense tree canopy, it acts like a sail on a boat. The tree absorbs the full force of the wind, which can lead to massive branches snapping or the entire tree uprooting and falling onto roofs, cars, or fences.
3 Steps to Monsoon-Proof Your Trees
Don't wait until you see the dust storm rolling over the mountains. Take these three steps now:
1. Schedule a Canopy Thinning: This is the single most important preventative measure. A professional arborist will selectively remove interior branches (crown thinning). This allows high winds to pass through the tree rather than pushing against it.
2. Remove Deadwood Immediately: Dead, brittle branches are the first things to snap during a microburst. Removing these hazard limbs (a process called deadwooding) ensures they don't become dangerous projectiles in your yard.
3. Check for Structural Weaknesses: Look at the base of your trees and the major branch unions. Do you see deep cracks? Is the tree suddenly leaning more than it used to? Has recent construction or landscaping cut into the root zone? If the structure is compromised, the tree may need to be safely removed before a storm brings it down for you.
The Danger of "Topping" Your Trees
You might see some landscapers "topping" trees—cutting off the entire top half of the canopy—thinking it makes the tree safer from winds. Never let someone do this to your trees. Topping severely damages the tree, causing it to rapidly grow weak, spindly branches that are actually more likely to break off in the next storm. Always hire a tree service that uses proper pruning techniques.
